Burgundy in California: Gavin Chanin Keeps Raising the Bar!
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Gavin Chanin is making some of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in California today. Placing an emphasis on terroir, balance, and overall drinkability, the Central Coast-based winemaker has raised the bar for Burgundy varietals in California, and he shows no signs of slowing down.
In their recent review of the wines of “In Pursuit of Balance,” a group of California winemakers dedicated to elegance and purity in wine, the International Wine Report had nothing but good things to say about the movement’s wineries, and lavished praise on the wines of Gavin Chanin in particular:
“Each producer's style is certainly unique, but all of the wines showed us how balanced and well-made Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from these Coastal influenced areas of California can be. Tasting these wines gave us a new excitement about these varietals in California. Much like it was after the Judgment of Paris, these wines should prove to the world that some of the purest examples of these varietals can still be found in California.” – International Wine Report
But they’re not the only ones. We at Zachys are unabashed fans of Chanin and Lutum (Gavin’s project in Sonoma County), and reviewers like Jeb Dunnuck and Antonio Galloni can’t help but agree:
“Readers who can find a few bottles won't be disappointed, as the wines are truly magnificent. Chanin favors a pretty straightforward approach that starts in the vineyard and finishes with wines that see minimal handling in the cellar. Chanin's Chardonnays and Pinots are a pure joy to taste.” – Antonio Galloni
This is rarely offered to us, and we typically grab as many of them as possible. Every year he rakes in the awards and press, and it has unsurprisingly happened once again. We’re offering these wines to you first, to give you first crack before they’re gone once again.
If you haven’t tried these wines yet, you don’t know what you’re missing!
All My Best,
