While the Wine Spectator recently declared the La Rioja Alta 2004 Rioja Reserva Ardanza to be the #22 Wine of the Year, Zachys has believed this to be one of the greatest values in all wine! We just picked up our last allocation of this special bottling and are including the two older siblings from the estate, the flagship Gran Reserva '890' and value-aged Gran Reserva '904.'
What's not to love about this historic estate of old-school Rioja? They aged the wines for us, releasing them with maturity, and delivering them with a spectrum of tertiary notes you simply cannot find with this level of provenance and pricing. If you are a fan of mature wines or looking for an alternative to Burgundy, or even Barolo, the Reserva and Gran Reservas from this historic estate have a lot to offer both the enthusiast and collector. These are rare wines of finesse and complexity, with each bottling revealing varying layers of dried red and black fruit, spice, tea, balsamic, tobacco, and leather.
The collection begins with the more introductory Reserva Ardanza, which overachieves at less than $30 a bottle. The wine arrived to the US with ten years of maturity, from one of the greatest vintages (2004) in Rioja, and the ability to age two decades plus. For the established collector, there is the Gran Reserva '890,' one of Spain's most collected wines and a monument to traditional Rioja. The grapes are hand-selected from old vines, aged more than six years in barrel and then bottle-aged another ten years. However, the highlight of the offer is the thirteen year old Gran Reserva '904,' under $50 with a 96 point review that we agree with it.
(La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904) "Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices, incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. Upon release it should continue to evolve for another 5-6 years and drink well through 2040." 96 Points, Wine Advocate
Spain has something to offer everyone. Last week we featured the bold, modern Riojas of Artadi, today we feature one of the original old-school Rioja producers.
