California or BUST!!! We’ve been singing this tune for a few months now, but now it’s abundantly clear: 2012 is a vintage for the ages throughout California.
It’s been more than 40 years since California wine staked its place in the wine world in the “Judgment of Paris.” That blind tasting that saw wineries like Stags Leap Cellars, Chateau Montelena, Ridge Vineyards, and others succeed where the status quo assumed they would fail. Today the thought of California as a top wine-making region is common knowledge to us in the USA, and the international markets are learning more and more why we love these wines so much.
Just when you thought they couldn’t get better than they did in 2010, the wines of the 2012 vintage have come along and are primed to shock the world once again:
“2012 [in Napa] looks spectacular. The resulting wines are exuberant and boisterous, filled with oodles of ripe fruit, exceptional purity and fleshy, succulent, mouthfilling, crowd-pleasing personalities of considerable character and richness. If you are not following what is going on in Napa Valley, you are missing some of the world's most compelling and provocative wines. End of story.” – Robert Parker, 10/13
“The 2012s [in Sonoma] are very pretty wines that reflect an even, temperate growing season with no real shocks. The wines, both white and red, are generally open and generous, with plenty of texture and ripe, but not over-ripe, fruit. There is a simple and very pure sense of pleasure that is abundant in 2012…a vintage of mostly outstanding wines…” Antonio Galloni 2/14
“…a warm, easy growing season, 2012 wines [in the Central Coast] appear to be supple, open knit and approachable. The have good concentration and surprisingly fresh acidities. No doubt though, the wines show an added level of texture and suppleness over the more focused 2011s and the vast majority should be relatively approachable on release. I'll report more on this vintage next year, but there's a lot to like here.” Jeb Dunnuck 8/13
