Last week, Antonio Galloni posted his rerated and retasted report, concluding that “the finest 2014s are utterly magnificent and well worth seeking out." He is not alone, yesterday evening James Suckling posted some similar remarks, upgrading the ratings on many of the wines he tasted when they were in bottle. So surprised by the recent retasting of 900 wines that he has declared, “Bordeaux’s 2014 vintage is one of the biggest surprises of my 34-year career...The days of over-extracted and over-wooded wines seem over...What makes the 2014s even more appealing is their prices. This may be the best value in Bordeaux since the 2008 vintage.”
Zachys has tasted many of these wines 2-3 times, and this is a classic vintage of finesse, charm, and reasonably priced Cru Classé Bordeaux. It is not often you see this many 94-95-point wines under $40, or wines like Ducru-Beaucaillou (99JS) at $124.99, Pontet-Canet (98JS) at $99.99, and Grand-Puy-Lacoste (97JS) at $64.99. We believe there are many balanced wines here that will surpass the quality of the ripe 2015, and this is a vintage to truly be excited about. We have restocked on many of these selections and it should be noted pricing is gradually increasing.
