1978 Direct from Bordeaux Under $50 (first-come, first-served)
36 YEARS OF AGE! Direct from Bordeaux!! The original second wine of the fabled Fifth Growth, Château Lynch Bages!!! Perfect provenance and UNDER $50!!!! This is one of those rare vintage offers that comes around from time-to-time that you need to grab quickly as it will not be here long.
Right off the heels of our hottest selling Bordeaux of the season, the re-releases of the 1995 Calon-Segur (97JS), Zachys has done it once again. We went to Bordeaux to uncover some rare vintage drinking values that provide a glimpse into what aged Claret is about, without the forbidding price tag a mature First Growth might carry – and we found it at what is arguably America’s favorite Château, Lynch Bages!
What you should know about the Haut Bages Averous wine is: it is the original second label of Chateau Lynch Bages composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Château Haut-Bages Averous takes the name of the former neighboring Pauillac property purchased by André Cazes. Since the late seventies, it has been designated as the second wine of Château Lynch-Bages. The 1978 represents one of the first released vintages of this second wine under the Cazes family. In 2008, the wine changed its name to Echo de Lynch Bages.
This wine has 36 years of age and provides a taste of what mature Bordeaux is about. Even with its nearly four decades of age the wine provides nice color with the telltale bricking-rim. The nose reveals mature claret nuances with leather and mushroom giving way to a selection of notes from the spice rack. For such an old wine the palate still provides some freshness and weight, unfolding with notes of red fruit and spice that work together for a nice finish.
